Guest post and contest with Mary Abshire

Today we have Mary Abshire here at the Bite Club blog talking about why she writes about vampires.  My review will be posted in the next couple of days so stay tuned. Mary has generously agreed to give away one e-copy of her book, Claiming the Evil Dead, and I will have details at the end of this post. So let's all welcome Mary Abshire *clapping and cheers*

Hello vampire fans!

Love vampire books? Me too. I always have. I guess the question is, why? For me, I go back
to my childhood days when I watched a lot of science fiction and horror shows. (Thanks
Mom). Whenever I saw a vampire, he was so…seductive, luring, inviting, powerful… and
most of the time, decent looking. They were mysterious and a little nibble on the neck
never hurt anyone. Right? Then in my teenage years, Anne Rice was popular and she really
knew how to make those vampires seem so…real and lifelike. Sure, they were darker and
had a few problems. (Don't we all?) They were definitely more dangerous and sexier. I
got "sucked" into their world. (Armand was my favorite.) Today, vampires seem complex,
oh-so-sexy, way more dangerous with their "supernatural" abilities, and even more
mysterious. Today, some vamps are heroes, noble men, and saviors. Vampires are the good
guys who like to sip a little blood. Why not? And today, we talk about sex with vampires,
even better. Let the imagination run wild! In short, my love for vampires started in youth
and blossomed over time. Whether it's a dark vampire with a goal or a good guy vamp out
for justice, I'm hooked. Vamp love is in my blood.

So, when I started writing seriously a few years ago, I wanted to write a different kind of
vampire novel. I didn't want it to be solely about a vampire, yet a vampire as one of the
main characters was a MUST. (Come on—I love them.) For my vamp, Drake, I stayed along
the lines of mysterious, sexy, complex, and a noble man with heart and soul. (Yes, vampires
have souls and they are not always good.) Drake works for an organization and he values
human life. Love? Over eight centuries, he never found it. Then he met Jessie, a half-demon
who can send evil souls to hell, and she changed his world. Surprise, surprise, demons and
vampires can get along.

Here is the blurb from Claiming the Evil Dead:

Half-demon Jessie Garrett is searching for an evil vampire that's been preying upon
children. She wants to claim the rogue vamp's soul and send it to hell. To find the dead
man walking she must partner with another bloodsucker, Drake, even though she
doesn't trust him. While Jessie works with Drake, she learns not all vampires are killers
and discovers the cold-blooded vamp is a temptation too difficult to resist.

After the fiend abducts another child and Jessie has a near fatal experience with
vampires, she turns to Jeremy, a demon she bumped into at a club, and makes a
deal with him for his help. Drake disapproves, and Jessie soon finds herself wedged
between two volatile creatures. When the chance comes to save the child's life and
claim the evil vamp's soul, she must decide whom she can trust—a vampire who cools
her feverish desires, or a demon hell-bent on seducing her.

Claiming Evil Dead is the first soul catcher novel. More soul catcher novels are on the way

I, too, have loved vampires since my childhood. I guess I was a bit of an odd kid - I loved to read - usually books that were way above my age range. Vampires are mysterious, sexual and very alluring. I love the power that they exude. I always thought it would be great to be a paranormal creature - and vampires would be at the top of my list.

I love vampires because I find them sexy, sensual and oozing with sex appeal. They have that bad boy persona of being deadly and dangerous but at the same time the epitome of protection. The vampires seem so loyal and devoted to the one that they love that they would do anything for their love.

That is why I love reading paranormal romance/erotica with vampires because they are so passionate and at the same time so protective and powerful. YUMMY! :)

Thank you so much for this giveaway!

I love vampires because they always appear powerful, alluring, passionate, sexual, intelligent, and carry a certain bravado about them that adds to their mystique. Like Mary, I too have always been captivated by vampires since I was a child. I have never seen them as really scary beasts either just different and like many of the novels out there, vampires are just another species living amongst the humans protecting themselves from evil imposed on them. Some vampires are portrayed like blood sucking fiends out to wipe out everybody in their path. Some are portrayed comically like when Bela Lugosi’s Dracula says, “Look into my eyes.” You sort of want to laugh at that but there is also this draw from the eyes of a vampire that is irresistible. Again, in many of the novels we read the lovers can emote so much and that the magnetism is there just by looking into one another’s eyes. My favorite vampires are the ones that are strong, protective, sexual, and good guys with all the flaws (and brooding) just like everyone else. But it is with these flaws they grow into even more powerful creatures when they finally meet their mate, their match the one who can balance them.

Mary,
I not only write about the sexy, dangerous, edgy vamps, I read about them. I grew up watching the classic stories, Elvira's classic Friday night show, or on Saturday nights. And then the modern stories came into vogue. What I find interesting is how the character of a vamp has evolved over the eons of their creation from ancient times and through most cultures around the world, which leaves us such latitude in creating our own "creature" and limited to only our imaginations. I could write more, but you can only imagine how long this comment would be if I did. I love my hunky, dark, and brooding vamps!

Wow, everyone has great comments!!
I was thinking about some older movies where vampires were not so sexy, yet I still found the vamps appealing. Just my opinion, but the guy in Fright Night was not hot. I love the movie, but he didn't "wow" me at all. Still, I was intrigued and I continue to enjoying watching that movie.
They are powerful, mysterious, full of history and emotion. Who wouldn't love such a creature?
Thanks for the comments!

I love vampires because I'm into bloodplay. I know it's weird, but the idea of a dark, sexy man overpowering me and drinking my blood for survival just gets me all flustered.

I love Vampires so much that I've also written a vampie romance. I started watching the old vampire moves and started doing research on them. I really loved the good or funny vampires, like "Love at First Bite" Or Dracula Dead and Loving It". I also liked "Van Helsing, It stared Hugh Jackman. and who can forget the "Blade series of movies. Eddie Murphy also did a decient vampire movie' A Vampire in Brooklyn." I believe it was called. I'm sort of so so on the "Twilight" series "Books & Movies, IMHO,Myers vampires are too, over the top, powerful. I personally like vampires that are more human like, don't take themselves too seriously, and have some weakness. One of my all time favorite authors is Lynsay Sands. Her vampires are hot, sexy and have a sense of humor. I'm definatly going to put your book on my TB list

Hi Mary!

What a great post!

I used to read vampire books, wrote a play about them fresh out of high school--in fact, I saturated myself with Vamps for so long, I grew a little tired of my own obsession. LOL Still, from time to time, I dip back into the immortal world because, honestly, there's no escaping the seduction of all powerful, hot men.

The reason I love vampires as a writer, however, differs from why I love them as a reader. There's just so much more you can explore with a man or a woman who has lived for centuries, or simply live differently than normal humans. I've yet to write a vampire book for publication, although I do have a request for a short with a sexy vampire as a main character.

I'm sure reading your book will only inspire me to dive in! It sounds like a fun read.

All my best,
Allure

Hi! Love vamp romances! I didn't watch much TV (still don't) so I was lured in with them as romances (but do recall reading a couple of Anne Rice long ago). Then when I got into the romances of them, just love them. And all the different paranormals (shapeshifters, werewolves, succubus, demons and more!) I love them at all sizzling levels! For me from those I read, I love the feel and intensity of finding a mate, that one special someone, that can't possibly be anyone else. And the intense extremes that they get to feel, if for the first time with that someone and fighting it because there is no other way. Plus the rules or route or I can't find a word today for it, that goes for the two of them to become one, to become who they are as vamps.

I have always been fascinated by Dracula. It's been many years since I've read it but there are so many variations of Dracula. The lure of the vampire is that he is sexy, urbane, handsome, sophisticated. He is there to seduce you and make you forget everything to be with him. Some of my favorite vampire series are Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Kim Newman's Anno Dracula series, and Jeanne Kalogridis' series Diaries of the Family Dracul. The sexiest Dracula in the movies was Frank Langella.

I love vampires because there is such a dark side to them. I am definitely adding this book to all of my lists.

I like the sexy ones because who doesn't like a little nibble on the neck? The bad ones make good horror stories as well!

Why do I love vampires? They are sexy. Most are brooding and mysterious. They cannot come in without an invitation so if they aren't handsome and seductive they don't come over my doorway. Frank Langella was so sexy in 1974 and is still my favorite Dracula.

They are dangerous sexual and sensual!
They live in this dark compelling world that we could only dream about well and read about:)
