Review: Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fischer

An ARC copy of Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fischer was sent to me for review, which I believe is out now for purchase! In the press release sent with the ARC it says this about the book:

Maddy Swift is just a normal girl--a high school junior surviving class with her best friend and hoping the yummy new kid, Stamp, will ask her out.  When he finally does, her whole life changes.

Sneaking out to meet Stamp at a party one rainy night, Maddy is struck by lightning.  After awakening, she feels lucky to be alive.  Over time, however, Maddy realizes that she's become the thing she and everyone else fear most: the living dead.

With no heartbeat and no breath in her lungs, Maddy must learn how to survive as a zombie.  Turns out there's a lot more to it than shuffling around 24/7 growling, "Brains".  Needing an afterlife makeover is only the beginning of her problems.  As Barracuda Bay High faces zombie Armageddon, Maddy must summon all of her strength to protect what matters most --just as soon as she figures out exactly what that is.

I haven't read too many zombie books, in fact this may have been my first at least in Young Adult.  Yes, I did listen on audio to CELL by Stephen King, which was kind of zombie-like and then I watched and loved Zombieland!  So that is about the extent of my zombie background.  I also have Dead Love on my shelf waiting to be read soon, signed (I got to meet the author!)

With that said, I have read LOTS of YA and Paranormal so it was just a different branch of those for me.  From the start I loved the humor in this book.  The Zombie-ness is introduced slowly throughout the book at a pace that worked well for me and the storyline.  It was quite enjoyable for any YA Paranormal fan and especially if you like zombie ya books.

One zombie fact for me that was interesting in this book, and introduced by the flyer description, is that zombies can be made by electricity such as a lightning strike.  I had no idea!  Did you?  They then have to eat brains in a certain time period to complete the process.  And I'm thinking, "How's that going to happen...nicely?" And...apparently, the store butcher sells a type of animal brains that will do the trick!  Okay, that's all I'm going to say, because there are ways to de-zombify them and bring them back, but I don't want to ruin it for you! Since there are good zombies and bad zombies, you know there will be a standoff.  A must read to find out more.  Very cool though.

On top of the zombie issues, there still manages to be a love story or two along the way as the title suggests in "A Living Dead Love Story".  A love triangle of sorts really, eek!  And it sounds like it may be continued...if there is to be another book...  And I hope there is!  I really liked Rusty Fisher's writing and zombie sense of humor so I'd love to see what happens in another installment.  Although, his next book listed on Goodreads coming out in 2012 is called Vamplayers.  Which, I also want to read!  But it is vampires, not zombies.  So stay tuned to see what else Rusty will bring us.  Hopefully more of the zombies who survive Zombies Don't Cry!  Upon further searching, it does look like he has a couple more ya zombie books coming out soon and we can at least hope Maddy and her friends will be in there somewhere.

You can also follow Rusty on one of his blogs, which are pretty cool.  He's listed at http://requestedmaterial.blogspot.com for one, but click on his profile to find two zombie related blogs.   And he's on Goodreads and Facebook!  He actually very coolly found me on a quote from Zombies Don't Cry that I posted in Goodreads!  I'm so glad to have had the chance to read this YA book and have found out more about Rusty's writing and books online!  Very cool.  Zombie cool!  :)
