Programme for Apprentice Demon Fighters

Hello. My name is Mab Vaughn, and I'm a retired demon-fighter. Well, perhaps semi-retired would be
more accurate. One never knows when one's services may be required.

I come from a long line of demon slayers, stretching back to Ceridwen, a Welsh goddess well known
for her shapeshifting ability. My race, the Cerddorion, have opposed demons since our mutual origins.
I have trained many a Cerddorion demon fighter, including my niece, Victory. Recently Vicky has
undertaken to train an apprentice of her own, a young, so-called “zombie” named Tina. So I thought
it would be helpful to put together a training programme for Vicky to use. Other experienced demon
slayers thinking of taking on an apprentice may find it helpful, as well.

Years 1-3: Know Your Enemy

Before an aspiring demon fighter can even begin to think of actual combat, it is essential to understand
the nature, habits, strengths, and weaknesses of the demons eventually to be encountered in the
field. There's simply no point in charging in unprepared, trying to fight (for example) a Glitch, using
techniques best suited for opposing Drudes. To do so is, quite frankly, to court disaster. A Glitch is
an anti-technology demon; a Drude is a nightmare-causing demon. Combat in the technological realm
requires a completely different strategy from fighting in the realm of dreams. Anyone who fails to
understand this has no business fighting demons.

So a firm grounding in the fundamentals of demonology is the necessary first step in any training
programme. The apprentice must gain an encyclopedic knowledge of demons before proceeding. For
this phase of training, the indispensable text is Russom's Demoniacal Taxonomy. Yes, it's dry. Yes,
it's lengthy. And yes, it's a couple of centuries old. But there's no better resource on demons. If an
apprentice cannot get through the book due to tone or length, that apprentice should not—indeed, must
not—continue training. As for age, some argue that Russom's has become dated, yet how much have
demons changed over the centuries? Very little. I can vouch for that from personal experience.

For the first three years of training, the apprentice must become thoroughly familiar with the contents
of Russom's, to be supplemented by other texts as required. Written reports, oral reports, and frequent
pop quizzes are the best means for demonstrating knowledge. In the third year, the apprentice may
move on to analysis of complex scenarios, such as “Is it likely that Imps and Hellions would form an
alliance? Why or why not? In the event of such an alliance (whether likely or unlikely), describe the
best strategy for defeating the enemy.”

Year 4: Introduction to Weaponry

After the apprentice has demonstrated a thorough understanding of the demon world and its
inhabitants, it's time to introduce weaponry. This year is reserved for gaining familiarity with the
different types of weapons. I recommend the following units, in order: the properties of bronze, bladed
weapons, projectiles, and techniques to enhance weapons' effectiveness (holy water, sacramental wine,
basic spellcraft, etc.).

Although the apprentice may view and handle individual weapons during this phase, the apprentice
should not use them, even in mock combat. The goal of this year is to know the different weapons
available and understand, in theory, which weapons are most effective against a particular type of
demon.

Years 5-6: Combat Fundamentals

This phase marks the beginning of the apprentice's physical training. It begins with a fitness regimen
designed to prepare the apprentice for combat training. Assign weight training to bolster strength and
long-distance running to increase endurance.

When the apprentice meets a high standard of physical fitness, weapons training—using wooden or
blunted weapons—may begin. The course of instruction should include swordplay, axes, throwing
(knives and spears), archery, marksmanship, and hand-to-hand combat. In Year 6, the apprentice may
accompany the instructor on demon-fighting excursions, but only as an observer.

Year 7: Advanced Combat

If the apprentice has progressed satisfactorily through the previous phases of training, advanced combat
may begin at this time. A word of caution, however: Do not embark upon this final phase of training
unless the apprentice has thoroughly mastered all previous phases. It is useful to test the apprentice's
knowledge and skills before proceeding. Better to spend another year or two on an earlier phase as
needed than send an unprepared demon fighter into the field. Too many have perished from going into
the field too early.

Advanced combat begins with a review of combat skills already learned—this time with sharpened
blades. The instructor must not pamper the apprentice during drills; demons most certainly will not
do so in an actual combat situation. Next, the instructor conjures small demons for the apprentice
to fight under controlled circumstances. The apprentice continues to accompany the instructor to
demon exterminations, moving from observer to back-up as individual progress warrants. Finally, the
apprentice takes the primary role in an extermination, with the instructor providing back-up. When
the apprentice has successfully exterminated at least one of each of the main types of demons without
excessive assistance from the instructor, the program is complete.

Guest post and contest: Nightingale by Ashley M Christman

Today we have author Ashley Christman in the house and she's giving away one ebook copy of Nightingale to one lucky commenter. So let's show some love and give a big Bite Club welcome...

Tales of vampires have been around for centuries. Slowly, they’ve evolved from tales of horror to tales of sensuality and sexuality because vampires are monsters. Beautiful monsters that look like human beings. This sensuality began with Bram Stoker’s Dracula with the title character and his seduction of Lucy, Mina, and of course the brides who seduced and fed from Jonathan. The thing that has never changed with vampires was that they represent death. They are affiliated with something so unnatural that they strike fear. They feed on the living to maintain their static state.

In my novel, Nightingale, the character of Grace Caldwell is a vampire. Where she’s different is that she came from a vampire father (death) and a sidhe mother (life). She’s grown, matured and changed as a living creature ought to, but she’s so intimately connected with death that it frightens her. The first in the Nocturne series, Grace Caldwell creates a juxtaposition even in her own world. Vampires are afraid of her and the Sidhe are confused by her. In the faery world, vampires are walking abominations and reminders of death and she is one of them.

By making my main character a vampire-faery mix, I had to explore weaknesses and strengths. She does need blood to survive, like all vamps, but she doesn’t need it as often. Sunlight doesn’t affect her, like a fae, but neither does cold-iron (very unfae-like).

I think readers will be interested in a world where faeries, vampires, werewolves, and other manner
of supernatural cross on a daily basis. Grace Caldwell walks these worlds not like a pro, but struggles
through them, and struggles to find herself in them. I think people can identify with it. I think readers will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Thank you.

Life is lucrative and easy for Dr. Grace Caldwell--daughter of vampire father and fey mother--until her ex-boyfriend, FBI agent Jack Montgomery, blackmails her into helping him solve a prostitute's murder. If only she wasn't as attracted to Jack as ever, she could concentrate on finding the murderer and get back to her regularly scheduled life. And then there's the vampire Constantine, seductive and powerful, a family friend she's supposed to marry...

Not much of a vampire, and clueless about her fey powers--if she has any--Grace must journey to the Sidhe and enlist the help of the fey to unravel the riddle of the murder. She and Jack might just get killed, but then, two worlds depend on her success. If she fails, both her worlds and all of humanity will descend into chaos of epic proportions.

Blood Eternal by Marie Treanor

Mark your calendars!!! Marie Treanor will be stopping by (and giving away a copy of Blood Eternal) on October 26th as part of her Bewitching Book Tour. You won't want to miss out on your chance to win. See you there!
Blood Eternal
By Marie Treanor
Awakened by Blood, Book 3
Signet Eclipse
Mass Market Paperback
4th October 2011

Secrets don't disappear after seduction... Elizabeth Silk is struggling to reconcile her  passion for the vampire overlord Saloman and her allegiance to the vampire hunters. When a  shocking vampire revolt calls Saloman away  from her, she refuses to follow him.

To make matters worse, Saloman’s beloved  cousin Luk has been found and awakened by one of his greatest enemies. Frenzied  with bloodlust, Luk embarks on a killing spree and prepares to expose Saloman’s  biggest vulnerability: Elizabeth.

But under Saloman’s regime, vampires have become less concerned with secrecy,  no longer willing to hide their power. Rumors are swirling about attacks on  humans. After Saloman joins forces with the vampire hunters to consolidate his  power, Elizabeth begins to understand her role in the inevitable collision of the two worlds. She could bring resolution between vampires and humans—if she can manage to stay alive long enough to play both sides….

Excerpt from Blood Eternal:

Set up: An Ancient vampire, believed to be Saloman’s newly awakened cousin Luk, has gone on
the rampage in the Turkish hills. Elizabeth Silk is helping the hunters to track Luk and his
allies…

Luk began to run, and as his limbs stretched out, he remembered their strength and what they
could do. A surge of excitement urged him to speed up, to run around the entire world and never
stop. But her scent was close and sweet, and as he leapt down the final fifty feet to land right in
front of her, he grew dizzy.

Startled, the woman fell back, her dark hazel eyes huge in her beautiful face. Hair the color of a
long-forgotten sunrise whipped against her soft cheeks in the breeze. Blood pumped through her
delicate veins. The sound and smell of it drove him to new hunger, but this was one human he’d
never kill.

“Tsigana,” he whispered.

The name held Elizabeth frozen. She’d had an instant’s warning from the Ancient detector,
which suddenly, after indicating his slow plod away from her, went nuts, the readings obviously
failing to keep up with the speed of the vampire who leapt out in front of her a bare instant after
she’d known he would.

She’d had time to press her buzzer, at the same moment it had gone off in warning. The others
knew. So she backed off, giving them time to get here, holding the stake poised for the vampire’s
attack that didn’t come. He stood unmoving, staring at her.

The ordinary vampire detector in her pocket was still and silent. So the Ancient was alone. She
prepared to attack, targeting the spot in his chest that she needed, but before she could fly at him,
he said, “Tsigana.”

If he’d said her own name, if he’d called her Jane or Esmeralda or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she
wouldn’t have hesitated in the slightest. But he said Tsigana, as if he’d seen straight to her one
weakness, a jealousy that amounted almost to fear of the long-dead human woman who had once
held Saloman’s heart.

Her fingers curled convulsively on the stake, altering its aim by accident, and she had to readjust
it. The Ancient who was Saloman’s cousin, his onetime friend and his betrayer, one of Tsigana’s
three vampire lovers, continued to stare at her. She had the impression that if he breathed he’d
have been panting, but weirdly, she sensed no threat from him. He lifted his arms slowly, reaching out to her with intense, weirdly unfocused longing. Understanding slammed into her
like a blow.

“I’m not Tsigana,” she said between her teeth. “I’m Elizabeth, the Awakener.” And she flew at
him, aware her aim was true. She summoned every ounce of strength, every ounce of power she
believed in. Because she didn’t know how long the hunters would take to get here, she had to try
to do it alone, as she’d once tried to kill Saloman alone. She still believed she could have slain
him, using her power as his Awakener, but she’d never found out for sure, because her heart, not
her body, had prevented it. There was no such prevention here; Luk was the cause of most of the
unbearable pain  that had haunted Saloman for centuries. He was as good as dead, and she
couldn’t even regret her lack of compassion.

But he didn’t wait for her. He leapt back so fast she didn’t even see him move. Her stake sliced
through air, almost overbalancing her.

“Not Tsigana,” Luk repeated. He sniffed the air.

“Tsigana is dead.” Again she leapt, this time before she finished speaking, but again he evaded
her. A howl rent the air, like a dog or a wolf in agony. It had to be coming from Luk, as his
distant figure leapt back up the hillside at impossible speed, the bloodcurdling wail fading with
him into the night. Not because he’d stopped crying, but because he was too far away to be
heard.

“Shit,” Elizabeth whispered. With shaking hand she retrieved the Ancient detector from her
pocket. The pointer indicated the hill up which Luk had vanished, the display counting madly as
the distance increased. Then it went dead. Elizabeth delved for her phone, just as the needle
swung rapidly several degrees to the west, and the display galloped forward.

Oh, hell, he’s doubling back. He’s gotten over Tsigana and now I’m dinner.

Blood Sin
Awakened by Blood, Book 2

Even if you walk in the light, you can dwell in
the dark.

Months after her dangerous encounter with  vampire overlord Saloman, Scottish academic
Elizabeth Silk is still trying to cope with both  the demands of her ancestral bloodline—which
marks her as a vampire hunter — and the  overpowering desire she feels for the immortal
she brought back from the grave. But she is not  alone in her fascination with Saloman.

When Elizabeth tracks down a distant cousin  from America, she learns he possesses an
antique sword that has caught the interest of the Grand Master of the American hunters. It is the ancient and mystical sword of  Saloman — a treasure of vast occult powers and a prize beyond measure to both  vampires and humans. Now the race is on for possession of the sword. Even as her enemies and allies shift their allegiances and battle for supremacy, Elizabeth must decide which will rule her own perilous fate: unwanted loyalty or unholy love.

Blood on Silk
Awakened by Blood, Book 1

The debut of a seductive new series of  vampires, lust, and revenge. Scottish academic Elizabeth Silk is spending  the summer in Romania researching  historical superstitions for her PhD. While she is tracing local folktales, one subject in  particular sparks her imagination. His name

Now, in the ruins of a castle crypt, Elizabeth  discovers the legends are real. Her blood has awakened him. Her innocence has aroused him. But Elizabeth unleashes more than
Saloman's hunger.

Blog tour and contest with author CJ Ellisson

Today we have another fabulous vampire guest here at Bite Club, although I hesitate to say whether or not she's as easily riled as yesterday's visitor. I'm simply not sure, so tread carefully or you might find a nice pair of ass kicking boots shoved...I kid, sorta. Our guest does not come empty handed and is kindly offering up 2 ebook sets of Vampire Vacation and The Hunt. Since this is an ebook contest I can open things up to our international crowd, no shipping fees to worry about, and will offer them up to all that leave a meaningful comment and a valid email, either with said comment or in the profile. So tell me how you'd envision the V V Inn. I'm always curious to see how others might view an undead only resort. How do vampires get pampered~ an endless blood supply? Seminars on evading Hunters? What would the rooms be like? The possibilities are endless! Don't forget to say Hi to Vivian.

And Now, a Word From Vivian

Allow me to introduce myself – my name is Dria McAndrews and I’m a vampire. I go by the moniker of “Vivian” to newer acquaintances, such as yourselves. The nickname began as a play on words from the employees working at my establishment, the V V Inn.

I’m not thrilled with the designation, but it’s grown on me.

I run an exclusive resort for the undead with my human husband, Rafe. You’ll see no commercials for our remote hideaway in Alaska, no tacky Priceline dot com deals, and certainly no website. Our clientele prize their secrecy and anonymity above all else.

Did you know the staid accountant who does your taxes and never seems to age, truly doesn’t? Yup, he’s one of ours. Or how about the pale nightclub owner of the swanky downtown joint that always has a line around the block? You guessed it – she’s a Vampire, too. There are a lot more members on our secret team than even you would have believed.

Our establishment caters to this unique group of individuals who hide their existence from the human race. Halloween and Anne Rice have made it easy for us to live openly for at least one month of the year, and even a bit longer in New Orleans—where the crowd is ever hopeful one of us will jump out from the shadows to seduce them. But day-to-day, across the globe, we must do our best to blend in and adapt to remain undetected.

What would you do if the governing body of vampires wanted you dead? Would you stand and face your stronger and more numerous counterparts or fake your death and hide? I may have the deadly power to manipulate and mind control my fellow vampires, but sheer numbers will beat me every time. I did the wise thing and hid.

Scoff all you will, but I’m happy. I live in a dark cold corner of the world with my loving husband, a tasty werewolf servant, and a successful business. Our clientele has no idea of my age or my unique power, and I plan to keep it that way.

Things went according to my carefully laid plans for years, until that damn dead body turned up last fall. Now my life has changed more in one year than it has in the past fifty! More vampires live permanently at our establishment and call me vile things like “boss” and “master” than I care to tolerate.

I’d much rather strip Rafe naked and pretend we didn’t have a care in the world. With this latest adventure, a planned hunt of a fellow vampire on the resort’s fifteen square miles of frozen wilderness, long past enemies have come to haunt me and threaten what is mine and all I hold dear.

Maybe the time to run and hide has stopped.

Allow me a moment to pull on my ass-kicking boots.

Come, join Vivian’s Seethe at the V V Inn and find out what happens…

Mojo Queen guest, contest, and blog tour

Night Life
By Sonya Clark
Daniel Rambin is a vampire, but he's not like other vampires. For one thing he's the sidekick and not the love interest in Mojo Queen, best friend and ancestor to paranormal investigator Roxie Mathis. Instead of being a brooding jailbait-obsessed Hot Topic reject, Daniel is charming and fun to be around. He adds generous shots of blood to his mixed drinks and misses eating, being a big fan of the Food Network. He likes to tag along with Roxie on her ghost eviction cases, even helping out. Like Roxie he loves music but whereas she's a blues fan, Daniel loves classic country. It's easy to envision him at a karaoke bar, belting out some off-key Conway Twitty number at the top of his lungs, flashing a smile at Roxie that bared just a hint of fang.

He may be atypical for a vampire, but he is still a vampire. There came a point in Mojo Queen when I knew that needed to be shown and it chilled me to write the scene. Suddenly I began to see Daniel in a new light. I stopped thinking of him as a wacky sidekick, a character I made up just for a laugh. The more I thought about him the more I wondered about that seemingly goofy choice to make him a fan of classic country. I strongly associate country music with family. Roxie's “living” family want nothing to do with her. Her ability to see auras and spectral energy, her magical practice as a hoodoo root worker, and her business as a paranormal investigator are all things her family cannot accept. Daniel is all she's got. Family are supposed to be the people you can trust the most, and Daniel is that to her. But he - like family - is also the one who could hurt her the worst. There's a lot of cheese in classic country, but when you look below the surface there's a lot of darkness too. A lot of murder ballads hidden under the beer soaked cheatin' songs. Without even trying, I had found the perfect music to correspond to Daniel.

That darkness is part of what brings Roxie and Daniel together. They share a deep bond in their love of the night, the ease they both feel in the spirit-filled dark. Daniel doesn't have to hide his fangs and Roxie doesn't have to hide her abilities. They are open with each other but Daniel still hasn't told Roxie everything about his past. Sometimes when he grabs hold of my imagination and whispers possibilities to me, I think about Daniel's history. His life as a man, his transition to vampire, and what led him to seek out any descendents. Daniel may not be the protagonist or the love interest of Mojo Queen but he is deeply important to Roxie. As I've explored his character more he's become deeply important to me, too. He's one of my favorite characters I've created so far.

As I compiled a playlist of songs that helped inspire me as I wrote Mojo Queen, I found Daniel's song with ease. Night Life by Willie Nelson seemed perfect for him. “The night life ain't no good life / but it's my life.” Daniel is a charmer, a sweet Southern gentleman. But he is fiercely protective of his best friend and descendant. Anyone tries to hurt her is guaranteed to see Daniel's fangs - without a smile.

Excerpt:
I sat in the chair opposite the loveseat, placing the candles on the coffee table. Glanced at him
to make sure I still had his attention, which of course I did. One side of his mouth still curled up
in a smirk, eyebrow quirked. I sat back, let myself sink into the comfy chair and relax as much
as possible. First the candle on the left. Focusing on the wick, I visualized a tiny flame erupting
from it--concentrating my will, pouring energy into my intention. I could feel myself sliding
further into exhaustion as energy curled inside me, but after a long, agonizing moment the candle
came to life. I let out a breath before I could stop myself, avoiding his gaze. I didn’t want him to
know how much this was taking out of me, but I had a bad feeling it was obvious. I turned my
attention to the other candle and though it took even longer this time, it too lit. I felt almost as
bad as I had this afternoon.

Blake reached for a backpack on the floor I had not seen in the darkness. He opened it, fished
something out, and tossed it to me. I didn’t so much catch it as let it fall in my lap. A chocolate
candy bar.

It was my turn to quirk an eyebrow. Waving the bar at him I said, “What, is this to ward off
dementors?”

The smirk became a genuine smile again briefly. “Something like that. You need to eat.”

I gave him a skeptical look.

“You know you’re using energy with that.” He gestured at the candles. “The energy needs to be
replenished.”

I rolled my eyes but tore open the wrapper. The chocolate tasted, well, damn, like mainlining
something illegal. Maybe he had a point. I was halfway through the bar when he spoke again, as
if there had been no pause.

“Especially since you don’t really know what you’re doing yet.” Even in the low candlelight I
had no trouble seeing the wicked amusement in his dark eyes.

I managed to finish chewing without choking, tossed the remainder of the candy bar on the
coffee table and sat up straighter. “Why don’t you tell me why you’re here? Or better yet, tell me
where I can find your demon lover? So I can send her back to Hell.”

“Well, actually, that’s exactly why I’m here, Roxanne.” Like we were discussing insurance or
something. “I want you to find my demon lover.”

Gob-smacked, all I could manage was, “Huh?”

“And I want you to send her back to Hell.”

Vampire Dreams Blog Tour and contest with Gabrielle Bisset

Today we are hosting a Bewitching Blog Tour stop for Vampire Dreams by Gabrielle Bisset, and one lucky reader will win an ebook copy! All contest details will follow our guest post. So now let's give a big Bite Club welcome to Gabrielle Bisset::clapping and cheering::

Last June, the Huffington Post ran an article on the psychology behind why we love vampires. The author, a clinical psychologist named Belisa Vranich, listed ten reasons we find them so fascinating. Among her reasons were the common ones given—they’re good looking; they have fangs (hello, Dr. Freud—this must be an oral thing); and they’re bad boys. No matter how good they are, they can kill, so they’re bad.

But there were other reasons the doctor mentioned that are less popular but no less fascinating. Vampires are loners. This is her first reason, and it’s not surprising since psychologists often notice the tendency to spend time alone as a key to our psyches. But it’s an interesting point. Werewolves and zombies tend to be pack types. One were or zombie brings legions more. However, with vampires, it’s entirely different. Solitary beings, seemingly by choice, these characters are often without any fellow vamps to pal around with. The psychologist believes this is how each of us feels at one time or another. I don’t know about that, but there’s definitely a lone wolf vibe about vampires.

Equally as interesting is her assertion that vampires are minimalists. As she claims, they don’t rely on gadgets or guns or other weapons since they have all the weapons they need right in their mouths. Now this only works if you’re talking about strictly paranormal vampire stories. As soon as you enter the world of urban fantasy, all bets are off concerning this minimalism of the vampire. A quick stroll through the world of J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood vampires shows you that these vamps are anything but minimalists. If anything, they love their toys, from phones, to cars, to computers.

What I think is most appealing about vampires and why they psychologically appeal to us, particularly women, is that they’re take care of business kind of beings. They see what they want, and they go for it. There’s no problem for them to simply see something and make it theirs. It’s who they are. And part of that taking care of business is knowing how the female psyche works. Find any vampire in romance and you’ll see a male who understands what turns women on. Vampires know the way a woman thinks and use it to their advantage. In other beings, this might be seen as villainous, but even with a bad vampire, readers are attracted because at their center, vampires may be manipulative, but it always feels so good when they are.

I’m happy vampires are so popular because I love reading and writing about them. Creating a good vampire in Brandon and an evil vampire in Vasilije made writing my novella Vampire Dreams so much fun. I hope readers never fall out of love with vampires because with so many authors writing about them, it creates a wonderful array of choices to read about our favorite bad boys.

Here’s an excerpt from Vampire Dreams:

The dark streets of the city lay sprawled out in front of her, filled with both possible danger
and salvation. As she ran, her feet pounding against the stones beneath them, her breathing came
in pants that stole the moisture from her mouth. Her eyes frantically scanned for someplace to
hide as she pushed her legs to run faster.
She could hear his feet as each one solidly hit the ground behind her. His stride much longer
than hers, he was coming closer with each step.

If he caught her...
The pounding of her heart hammered in her ears as the blood pushed faster and faster
through her body. Up ahead, she saw a door ajar in a rundown building. If it was empty, she
might be able to find a place to hide and hopefully escape from the pain of what awaited her if he
captured her.
She slipped through the doorway, but her cape caught on the doorknob, costing her precious
moments. As she worked to free herself, she heard his footsteps slow down to a walk, a sign he
was as sure as she that he’d won.
Finally, in desperation, she tore the fabric from the knob, and free to run once more, she
turned and ran headlong into the chest of a man who stood silently watching her.
“Please save me! He’s coming for me!”
Without a word, the stranger took her by the arm and led her to a table near the far wall.
With his hands on her shoulders, he hesitated a moment and then spun her around.
His voice deep, he commanded, “Place your hands on the table and bend over.”
Unsure if she’d chosen a fate as horrific as the one she’d fled from, she did as she’d been
told and waited in terror for what was to come.
The noise of her stalker entering the building caused her to turn her head, but the voice
behind her sternly warned, “Face forward.”
She felt hands lift her cloak and dress, allowing the cool night air to hit the bare skin of
her thighs. The feeling at once thrilled and shocked her, and she instinctively stood up to cover
herself.
The man behind her forcibly pushed her back toward the table and leaned over her to
whisper low in her ear, “Trust me,” as he pushed his body firmly against her backside.
“Hey you! Where’s the girl who came in here?”
With his hands on her hips, the man who gave her no choice but to trust him pushed his
hips toward hers and thrust toward her still clothed body to simulate sex, complete with throaty
groans.
“Hey! I asked you about the girl who came in here!”
Never looking back, Arden squeezed her eyes closed, shutting out the moonlight that
streamed in through the window above, and waited for the attack she feared. Instead, she heard
the man whose body continued to meet hers bark, “Go away! This whore’s mine!”
Indignant at the use of the word whore to describe her, she started to push herself up but his
hand held her by the neck and forced her to remain still on the table. A sound like a hiss came
from her protector and the other man hurriedly ran out of the building.
